The Catholic Order of Christian Funerals gives us words that acknowledge all of the emotions surrounding a loss of a loved one. As soon as possible after death, families should contact the church to begin the planning process. Below is information to consider as you plan:
The Vigil service normally takes place at the visitation, which usually takes place the evening before the funeral Mass. The Vigil Service consists of Scripture readings, prayers, intercessions, and often and brief homily by the presider (usually a priest or a deacon). This is optional and not required.
The normal practice for Catholics who have died is to have a funeral Mass. This is always preferrable. A funeral liturgy outside of Mass is less common and should only be selected in special circumstances.
The most common considerations for funeral are music, readings, and roles that family members may fill during the liturgy. We will help you with these choices and walk you through the process.
